How it actually plays
The player moves Mario or Luigi across an overhead overworld map with branching paths, then enters side-scrolling levels by stepping onto icons. Most levels are linear and require dashing, jumping, dodging, or defeating enemies. The Spin Jump crushes enemies and breaks blocks—but only when a power-up is active. The Cape Feather enables flight or gliding. Yoshi riding adds momentum-based jumps and enemy stomping. Lives are lost on contact with enemies while small, falling, crushing, lava, or time-out. Continuation is only possible from completed castles, fortresses, or ghost houses.
What works
The overworld map creates real choice: players pick between action panels, fortresses, ghost houses, and castles to reach each world’s goal. The Spin Jump is a rule that shapes every jump—timing it unlocks verticality, combat, and block-breaking in one motion. Cape Feather flight turns traversal into deliberate, physics-led negotiation of airtime and descent. Yoshi’s momentum makes jumps feel consequential, not just reactive.
What does not
It does not sustain tension through difficulty escalation. Enemy placement rarely forces new responses after the first few worlds. The auto-scrolling levels impose pace without adding meaningful risk. The lives system feels vestigial—continuation is gated only by castle completion, not progress within a level.

It asks for spatial memory, timing, and pattern recognition, but never demands precision beyond what its physics reliably deliver. A session is 15–30 minutes: one world path, one fortress, or a Star Road detour.
