Centipede is a fixed shooter arcade game developed and published by Atari, Inc. in 1981. The player controls the Bug Blaster at the bottom of the screen with a trackball and shoots upward at a segmented centipede descending through a field of mushrooms.
How it actually plays
The player moves the Bug Blaster left and right along the bottom of the screen with a trackball. They shoot darts upward at a segmented centipede descending from the top. Each shot turns a segment into a mushroom and splits the centipede there. The rear piece grows a new head. The centipede moves horizontally until hitting a mushroom or the screen edge, then drops one level and reverses. Mushrooms take four shots to destroy and yield one point each. As mushrooms accumulate, the centipede descends faster.
What works
The trackball gives immediate, tactile control over lateral movement—no acceleration, no inertia, just direct translation of hand motion to on-screen position. The centipede’s segmented structure creates cascading consequences: every shot changes the enemy’s composition and trajectory. Mushroom accumulation acts as a dynamic difficulty dial, tightening the play space and accelerating threat without adding new rules.
