What the game is
Q*bert is a 1982 Gottlieb arcade action-puzzle game. It is not a pinball machine. Its objective is to change every cube in a 28-cube pyramid to a target colour by landing on them, while avoiding death from falls or purple enemies.
How it actually plays
The player hops Qbert diagonally across a 28-cube pyramid using a single, diagonally mounted four-way joystick. Each landing changes a cube’s colour. Early levels require one landing per cube to reach the target colour. Later levels demand two landings per cube, or cycling through colours on each landing, or both. Purple enemies kill on contact. Green enemies vanish on contact. Falling off the pyramid kills Qbert.
What works
The diagonal joystick creates immediate physical feedback: movement feels deliberate, unsmooth, and spatially disorienting — which matches the pyramid’s forced perspective. The rule shifts (one landing → two landings → cycling) escalate cognitive load without adding new inputs. Green enemies vanishing on contact gives small, clean rewards.
What does not
It does not sustain attention beyond its first few minutes unless you are drawn to the friction of its control scheme. The pyramid’s geometry forces repeated reorientation. There is no narrative, no progression in ability, and no variation in goal — only escalation in execution.
