Donkey Kong (1981 video game)
Donkey Kong (1981) is Nintendo’s first major arcade success and one of the first platform games. Developed by Shigeru Miyamoto after Radar Scope’s failure, it casts the player as Jumpman ascending a New York construction site across four single-screen stages—25, 50, 75, and 100 meters—to rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong. Gameplay revolves around running, jumping over gaps and obstacles, climbing ladders, and avoiding barrels, oil drums, cement pans, springs, and falling hazards—all under a shrinking bonus timer. Points reward precise actions: leaping, hammering, collecting items, and removing rivets. Lives end on contact, fatal falls, or timer expiry. Jumpman later became Mario.
